Department: Girls Thrive
Purpose of Job: Girls Thrive (GT) is a local, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is on a mission to inspire girls to empower themselves through a variety of physical activities and educational lessons designed to promote self-confidence, self-esteem, and positive body image. We provide seasonal programming throughout the year to girls in grade 4-12.
Through the Community Program, GT provides four sessions throughout the year to girls in grades 6-12 of all backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and abilities: eight-week Fall and Spring Sessions, a six-week Winter Session, and a two-day Summer Confidence Clinic. Mountain biking, running, and cross-training (indoor rock climbing, strength training, hiking, spinning, yoga, etc.) activities comprise the physical activity facet of the Fall and Spring Sessions, while snowshoeing/micro-spike hiking, cross-country skiing, swimming, and indoor rock climbing comprise the Winter Session. The physical activities provided during the Summer Confidence Clinic vary upon location of the clinic and what our partners can provide; however, this year they include: yoga, birding, fishing, and paddle boarding.
All GT Sessions include a plethora of educational topics pertinent to growing young women. Topics are taught by local professionals, who volunteer their time to educate the participants. Educational lessons vary each session, but generally include: body image, nutrition, mental/physical/emotional health, goal-setting, cultivating confidence, facing fears, leadership, and more.
GT also provides a School Program for girls in grades 4-5. The program was piloted last year in January - April and took place at three Title One elementary schools: Warren, Broadwater, and Bryant. The School Program is a condensed version of the Community Program and girls meet with coaches at the school facilities to eliminate transportation barriers to attending the program.
Participants in the School Program participate in physical activities like: yoga, relay races, and games, while also learning about pertinent topics such as: friendship, goal-setting, mental health, and nutrition.
