Overview:

An agency is seeking a skilled Legal Counsel to provide litigation and in-house legal support on a range of civil and administrative matters. This role will advise boards and commissions, handle complex legal proceedings, and support high-level agency decisions with sharp legal guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Represent state agencies in civil and administrative litigation
• Serve as legal counsel to boards, commissions, and agency officials
• Manage cases through district courts and appeals processes
• Draft pleadings, oversee discovery, and represent clients in mediation
• Analyze and advise on constitutional, statutory, and regulatory matters
• Conduct hearings under Montana's Administrative Procedures Act

Requirements:

• Juris Doctor degree and active state bar membership (or bar eligibility)
• Minimum of two years' experience in litigation or related legal work
• Demonstrated research, legal writing, and oral advocacy skills
• Proven ability to manage complex legal caseloads independently
• Willingness to obtain Montana bar license if not already admitted
• Excellent communication and client-facing professionalism

Compensation:

$95,000–$108,000 annually
