Overview

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Senior & Long Term Care, Aging Services (State Unit on Aging). The Bureau Chief (Coordinator on Aging) is responsible for the management of the Older Americans Acts programs through coordination with the nine Area Agencies on Aging to enable older adults (60 and older) to maintain an independent lifestyle in their homes and communities, have access to education on aging issues, and live in dignity by carrying out the functions and duties as required by the Act. The programs in this bureau include the Older Americans Act Supportive Services, Nutrition Services, Health Promotion through evidence-based programs and caregiver supports, the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, Legal Services Developer Program, State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), Aging and Disability Resource Centers, other discretionary grants such as Lifespan Respite and the Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition program for older adults.

The Bureau Chief is also responsible for the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging, which has the mission to assist the governor and DPHHS in planning, coordinating, and operating of programs within state government that affect older adults of the state and identifying ways to improve the effectiveness of programs. The Governor's Advisory Council on Aging also hosts the annual Governor's Conference on Aging.

Responsibilities

As Bureau Chief, you will manage the Older Americans Act programs, coordinate with Area Agencies on Aging, develop and oversee supportive services, nutrition services, health promotion programs, caregiver supports, the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, and other related initiatives. You will also lead the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging and host the annual Governor's Conference on Aging. Your role includes policy development, program management, budgeting, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing older adults and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of federal and state budgeting processes and the state budgeting system.
  • Knowledge of concepts and practices of personnel management and supervision.
  • Ability to develop effective strategies for change with workable policies and practices.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human Services, Social Services, Health Administration, Public Administration, or closely related field.
  • Five years of job-related work experience in program and budget management of community-based human services and supports.
  • Master's degree with three years of relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Supervisory experience required.

Additional Information

This position is a mandatory reporter of suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation of individuals over the age of 60 and those with disabilities over the age of 18.

This position may be eligible for a statutory 2.5% an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2026.

This position is open until filled with frequent screening of applicants.

Salary

$42.90 - $42.90 Hourly. Telework Eligibility: Telework Eligible (Full‑time telework is not available. Telework schedule must be supervisor approved.) Benefits Package Eligibility: Health Insurance, Paid Leave & Holidays, Retirement Plan.
